Precision Alignment & Metrology

Marine Engine & Propulsion Shaft Alignment — Piraeus, Greece

Propulsion system alignment — from main engine to propeller — is performed with state-of-the-art laser systems at 1.0 μm accuracy.

Complete alignment work — measurements (laser and sag & gap on flanges), adjustment and final verification with bearing load distribution — not just a geometric survey. Where required, stern tube bore alignment is included. Flagship project: the installation of a 215 t MAN B&W main engine on a 183 m tanker

All work is carried out on site: at shipyards, dry docks and marinas — Piraeus, Perama, Salamina, Elefsina, Syros, Chalkida, Corfu — throughout Greece and worldwide, as well as afloat. Bearing load distribution is verified with jack-up measurements, and every job is documented with a technical report: before/after readings and, where requested and available from manufacturers’ instructions, the corresponding tolerances.

Applications

  • Main engine – gearbox, including elastic mountings
  • Gearbox – tailshaft and intermediate shafts, through to the propeller
  • Sag & gap on flanges — stern tube bore alignment
  • In dry dock, at the marina or afloat
  • Technical report with before/after readings and manufacturers' tolerances

Case studies & field applications

Main engine on conical elastic mountings vs. gearbox

Challenge: Main engine mounted on conical elastic mountings — the vibration isolation system complicates alignment, with dynamic vs. static positioning considerations, a critical gearbox interface, and load distribution across mounting points.

Solution: Laser alignment compensates for elastic mounting deflection, ensuring optimal power transmission and bearing life.

Ocean tug stern thruster

Our laser alignment procedures verify angular and offset alignment parameters, ensuring optimal power transmission from motor to stern thrust propeller. This precision work minimizes mechanical stress on bearings and couplings while maximizing thrust output and efficiency during vessel operations.
